Sir Paul Smith, Milan 2009
Universally-loved Brit king of fashion and of stripes – soon to star in his own Design Museum show.
Sir Paul Smith took digital photographs of summer flowers to turn into a flamboyant curtain for the "British Design Embassy" in Milan during April 2009. He gave a talk to the international press, and posed for this photograph, which I sent to him later. I received a touching hand-written postcard in reply. I had also enclosed some lines by AA Milne.
"In a corner of the bedroom is a great big curtain.
Someone lives behind it, but I don't know who;
I think it is a Brownie, but I'm not quite certain.
(Nanny isn't certain, too.)."
In September 2009, Sir Paul won the second London Design Medal.
