John Makepeace, London 2009
Influential and much-loved founder/director of Parnham College (1977-2000), "father of furniture design" and master of craft.
So many times so many furniture designers – those that love wood – will tell you they "trained with Makepeace." John Makepeace put his heart, soul and finance into Parnham College which he founded and ran from 1976-2001. At the same time, he continued to develop his own highly original style. Here, he is at a group show of British designer-makers, called 21st Century Furniture Makers – the Arts & Crafts Legacy, at The Millinery Works in North London in 2010.
"Wood is linear and mass-produced furniture will to a large extent always remain linear," John once said to me. "But in our workshop we can make wood bend and flow in a way a factory never can." And we are all so glad for that.
