Thomas Heatherwick, now so famous for his design of the Olympic cauldron and London's new double-decker bus, won the London Design Medal in 2010. In his acceptance speech he paid a moving tribute to his grandmother Elizabeth Tomalin, and brought her to the Medal dinner. Before the war, she had fled Nazi Germany, settled in Britain and founded the textile design department of Marks & Spencer. "She was my design inspiration," said Thomas.
