Nadia Boutarfa, London 2013

Bringing a new look to British design, creating of-the-moment patterns from extensive craft research/techniques and digital production.

Nadia was showing at New Designers, with the University of Central Lancashire.
She radiates joy of design, and I was enchanted by her sheer joi de vivre. I have picked her as a face of new British design, for all kinds of reasons. Firstly, she is female, and design is still largely male-dominated (though women do predominate in surface pattern). Her parents come from Tunisia, but she was brought up here and is thoroughly British. She has designed her own headscarf. Her work is a marriage of art, craft and technology. It involved multiple experiments with dyeing techniques, but was then digitally turned into pattern.
