Martino Gamper, London 2012
London-based Italian (on his own bench at the V&A); racy "upcycler" who once made a 100 hybrid chairs in a 100 days.

Barbara writes:
Martino Gamper walks the walk along his design for The Bench Project at the V&A Museum in 2012. Ten designers had chosen different materials and Martino's pretty obviously is wood – American hardwood, to be precise. His bench could be made in sections to any length. Martino came to fame with his 2007 "100 chairs in 100 days" project, cannibalising unwanted chairs from skips and other sources into startling new forms. I went to Hackney to see this work in progress, filling the ground floor space of the ex-industrial building where Martino shared a squat. Later it won the Furniture section in the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year Award at the Design Museum.
