Robin Levien & Patricia Stainton, London 2004
Britain's foremost designer of ceramic bathroom fittings and best-selling tableware, with his wife, graphic artist Patricia Stainton, now designing landscapes.
I seem to have known Robin forever, well since the early 80s, anyway, and the beginning of his career. He is well-known for his bathroom ceramics, indeed his studio has designed 15 per cent of what's on the market today, in the main for Ideal Standard. Robin began working for Ideal Standard in 1979 and accordingly was presented with a watch for long-service in 2004.
There was a celebratory lunch, and afterwards I took this photograph.
My favourite Robin range over the years is called Space (for Ideal Standard). He was the first to show that you could pack good design into the pint pot of the British bathroom, inventing the corner loos, showers and washbasins that have been so widely copied.
I have the honour to chair the judges for the Homes & Gardens Design Awards, and Robin is a long-standing stalwart of our panel.
